Camping adventures offer a unique opportunity to enjoy nature and get away from it all. However, for anyone new to the world of camping, getting started can be overwhelming. In this blog post, we share valuable tips to help make your first camping trip with Cheeky Campers smooth and stress-free. From how to properly handle your campervan to how to plan the best route, we've covered everything you need to know to make your trip unforgettable.
1. Camper
The camper is the heart of your holiday. It is therefore important to familiarise yourself with the vehicle and get to know all the functions. Simply hire our camper a few hours before your planned start to familiarise yourself with the size and driving experience. This allows you to try out all the controls without having to search for them while driving. To help you find your way around quickly, we have compiled the most important information about our camper vans in a van booklet so that you have the most important information quickly and easily in one place. This will be sent to you before your trip, but you will also find a printed version in every van. It is important that you know the dimensions of our vans in case you want to park in a restricted car park or even use a ferry. You should also familiarise yourself with the operation of the camper in order to make full use of all the functions. All the built-in elements are super easy to use and quick to understand.
2. Route and planning
As the saying goes: the journey is the reward. To keep your journey adventurous and enjoyable, good planning is essential. Use both digital tools and traditional maps, because sometimes sat navs or smartphones fail and an analogue map comes to the rescue. Plan your route in stages, depending on the number of riders and the desired daily distance. Motorways are fast, but country roads and main roads are ideal for a relaxed, scenic journey. From our own experience, we can say that it has always paid off to take the slower route. You get to places that are not even on your route and get to know the country from a different perspective. You also often save on tolls if you avoid the motorways.
3. Set stages and daily goals
Shorter stages and several stops will make your journey a little more relaxed and you will see more of the country you are travelling through. With children in particular, the stages should be shorter and ideally travelled in the early hours of the morning. This allows the little ones to sleep en route and you get to see more of your destination. You will also avoid the heat of the midday and afternoon hours in summer. Plan your daily destinations carefully and research accommodation options in advance. Camping sites and well-lit, supervised pitches are recommended for newcomers to camping. These offer more safety and comfort. You can find out more about this in the next section.
4. Overnight stays and breaks
For your first nights as a camping newbie, you should choose campsites and designated pitches. The advantages are obvious: if you need something, you can usually find a shop on site and many campsites are located close to towns or villages. They also offer sanitary facilities, washing machines and tumble dryers. The most important thing, however, is safety. The fee for the campsite is therefore a worthwhile investment for a safe stay. Plan ahead and make a reservation for longer stays. Familiarise yourself with the rules and keep your pitch clean.
Wild camping: Pay attention to the regulations of the respective country!
We don't want to talk you out of wild camping. Once you have found a suitable place, make sure you always lock your bus and stow your valuables safely or carry them with you. For additional security, you can use a mini safe and a steering wheel lock.
Important: Find out about the local regulations. Is wild camping allowed? If so, where and under what conditions? Are there burglary warnings for the region?
5. Secure load
A crucial tip, especially for new campers: after every break and before every journey, make sure that all doors and flaps are closed, that everything is securely stowed away and that nothing is lying around inside that could fly around during the journey. A safe load means a safe journey!
6. Pack correctly
Don't know what to take with you on your camping adventure? No problem! We can help you with that. You can find our blog post with a packing list that covers everything you need here.
